There's just
something about a cigar bar that screams New York. Dimly-lit lounges, jazz
playing softly, and brandy or scotch in hand--are some images that come to mind
when visions of grandeur are dreamt up by a non-native New Yorker. I should
know; I was living in Maryland when I started imagining life in the Big Apple.
New Yorkers are so passionate about their cigars, in fact, that when the smoking ban
swept the nation and forced smokers outside, several establishments received
coveted exemptions from this law. Below you will find a few that may strike your fancy...

This
bar/library...or maybe library/bar would be more fitting, is the perfect setting
for a modern day film noir hero to come after another day of being seduced at
the office or trying to find a stolen Maltese Falcon. Walls of leather bound books titivate this space with sex
appeal and intellect alike and a handful of low tables set the perfect scene
for a secret rendezvous or a boys' night out. But be warned: admission to this
Eden is not certain. Guests must be buzzed in at the door, which occurs only
after the Hostess gives you the once-over. They have a strict policy on no
jeans or flip-flops, and require gentlemen to have their collared shirts tucked
in at all times, with jackets in the fall and winter. They also insist that
patrons be at least 25-- though this is something that I have not seen enforced,
thankfully.

On the other
side of town -- and the higher side of prices -- is The Carnegie Club, which is
similar to a 21 Club meets West Chelsea. A large amount of regular constituents
pay homage during the week, while
throngs of tourists dominate the weekend. The sets of live jazz really get the
house moving and with the exorbitant selection of spirits and cigars, this is a
great place to start the night or end it...depending on how much of that year-end
bonus you have left.

that the cigar smoke and extensive alcohol selection are the main force to be
reckoned with here. There's a brightly-colored dress for every 5 bespoke suits
